On 25th September 1923, forty men were killed when Redding Colliery, near Falkirk, was flooded with water – one of the worst in the history of the Scottish coalfield industry – and 100 years on a new memorial was unveiled, which aims to tell the tragic story of the disaster for a new generation.
Capvond were extremely privileged to be asked to manufacture two new commemorative statues, and working with sculptor, Ruth Davies, and under the guidance of William Allardyce, we made a miner and also a lady holding a baby, waiting anxiously at the mine entrance (based on a photograph taken in 1923).
It may be fitting that some of the materials used in the manufacturing were recycled materials from the coal industry – a circular economy indeed!
